I recently had cause to dispose of a small portable fridge whilst on holiday in Killin. As you are well aware there is nowhere legally to dump this in Killin since the skip has been removed. So I drove to Callender where I found that the big new tip was closed and I was informed that it only opened between the hours of 17:00hrs – 20:00hrs, not much good at 14:00hrs on a weekday. I then travelled to Stirling to buy another portable fridge, where in Argos I found that they would sell me one, but would not help me dispose of the old one. Which I thought under WEEE the were obliged to do so, However I asked the staff if they could tell me where I could find the local Tip, before they had time to answer, a local resident who was also doing some shopping, informed me that you have to have a card as proof you are a resident of Stirling to dump stuff. He actually then saved the day by offering to dump it for me and promptly walked out of the shop with it.

I thought this story would be of interest the local population and may help explain why it is inevitable that some people will find alternative places to dump stuff. Which will be a sad day for this village, which I often visit to enjoy its beauty. I write this so maybe someone will see sense and prevent the obvious.

Hi Silver Fox, Unfortunately it is Stirling Council who closed the skip and will not re-open it. Residents are very frustrated at this any other services that Stirling Council are withdrawing from us. The Community Council are looking at other options, but concerns are if people dump stuff like asbestos then it would be the CC’s responsibility. Such a shame that the actions of the minority withdraw a service from the many.
with regard to WEEE you should contact SEPA http://www.sepa.org.uk to get full information.

    Hi Lizziekillin
I can understand abusing the use of the skip does punish everyone and your point about the minority is so true of many services we could all enjoy. As a very proud Scot I hope somthing can be done to help save our lovely countryside from alternative dumping.

I have already taken advice regarding WEEE and I have included my reply.

would advise that Argos are members of the Distributor Take Back Scheme (DTS) which is currently run by a company called Valpak. By joining this scheme, they are opting out of taking back any WEEE from their customers but are to refer them to their nearest recycling centre or recycle-more.co.uk so the customer is able to locate this themselves.
