Hi, I’ve never visited this part of Scotland but have learned that my 3rd great grandfather was born there. I would love to learn more. Are there McLarens still in the area? His name was Alexander McLaren born 1806 in Killin, son of Donald (1769) and Annie McLaren, grandson of John McLaren(1769) and Marjory McDiarmid. The siblings I know of were John and Patrick.

Alexander’s first wife was Annie Lockett but we don’t know anything about her. Alexander went to British Guiana and owned a plantation. He married a back woman named Fatima Parr and had several children who were sent home to school in Greenock. Alexander returned to Scotland around 1850 and left Fatima behind.

Apparently some of the McLaren’s lived in Greenock and were in shipping. Is that close to Killin? When in British Guiana he shipped sugar back to Greenock. One of his children, Annie McLaren born 1849, married Alexander Philip and lived for a few years in West Linton before moving to British Columbia around 1900. I did visit West Linton and Peebles once and thought the area was just beautiful!

It is hard to do research from so far away so I really appreciate any info. I’m willing to share any McLaren names that I have, the earliest is John McLaren born 1713 and wife Anne Walker born 1715.

    Thanks
    Cathy
